New Lab To Speed Up Hanford Cleanup Opens
A new laboratory the government hopes will sharply reduce the $1 trillion bill to clean up the nation’s nuclear weapons mess was dedicated Wednesday by Energy Secretary Hazel O’Leary.
The $230 million lab is on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, the former plutonium production site that contains more than half the nation’s nuclear weapons wastes.
The lab is intended to perform basic molecular research that will hasten and cheapen the cleanup throughout the massive Department of Energy nuclear weapons complex, O’Leary said.
