Homefest 96 Loaded With Decorating Ideas

If you need ideas to tackle home remodeling or decorating projects this winter, pick up some at Homefest 96: The Home Idea Show.

The annual event at the Interstate Fairgrounds is loaded with booths - 250 of them - with products, services and ideas for the holidays and for spring landscaping projects.

Homefest runs noon to 9 today, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $4; free for kids 12 and younger.

Don’t invite these critters

The fact that temperatures are dropping hasn’t gone unnoticed in many quarters, including the rodent population. Because mice and rats head indoors when winter approaches, October has been designated as National Rodent Prevention Month by the folks who make d-CON.

To prevent a mouse population explosion in your house, seal up potential entrances with sheet metal, steel wool or concrete (mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a nickel); remove items that are potential nesting sites, such as empty boxes and stacks of newspapers (even on shelves, since mice can leap 12 inches vertically); keep a clean house by disposing of trash and clutter, and when needed, use rodenticides.

A free brochure with other tips is available by sending a self-addressed envelope to: d-CON Consumer Brochure, P.O. Box 8737, Young America, MN 55551.

Get organized

A unique holiday gift idea crossed our desk recently, perfect for anyone with a boxful of earrings. Vanitylamp will keep your earring collection organized; simply hang earrings in the holes punched all over the lampshade. That way the shade is uniquely decorated and you can see your earrings in good light. There are also compartments in the ceramic base to hold earring backings as well as rings and necklaces.

The lamp, available in ivory or black, is $29.95, plus $5 shipping. To order, call (800) 526-7463.
