A young woman riding in a car was fatally shot on Interstate 5 in south Tacoma in an apparently random attack, police said.
The woman, identified as Annette Vargas, 18, of Lakewood, was a passenger in a car driven by her 20-year-old boyfriend. Their 2-year-old son was strapped in a car seat in the back seat.
The car was exiting I-5 onto 38th Street in Tacoma at about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday when a bullet broke through a rear side window and struck the woman in her upper torso, police spokesman Jim Mattheis said.
“It appears totally random, and the single shot is believed to have come from another vehicle on the freeway,” Mattheis said.
The boyfriend told police he heard a “pop,” saw his girlfriend slump over and initially thought she had fainted.
The boyfriend drove her to St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, where she was pronounced dead on arrival, Mattheis said. The boyfriend and child were not hurt.
