Dee Moronkola recovers loose ball in the end zone after Ray Jackson blocked Ryan Longwell’s punt. Tony Trant kick. On third-and-2 from the Cal 24, James Darling flew into the hole to slow Brandon Willis and Gary Holmes wrapped him up at the 25, forcing a punt. Jackson went around the defensive right end to make the block.

SECOND QUARTER WSU 14, California 0

Chad Carpenter 11-yard pass from Ryan Leaf. Truant kick. 60-yard drive in 14 plays, 2:38. Michael Black takes a screen pass right from Leaf and cuts to the left, angling all the way across the field for a 27-yard gain to the Cal 22.

WSU 21, California 0

Leaf 1-yard sneak. Truant kick. 38-yard drive in three plays, :35. Leaf audibles to a pass and hits Shawn McWashington on a streak down the right sideline for 35 yards to the Cal 3 on play after Holmes recovered a fumble on the 38.

WSU 21, California 3

Ryan Longwell kicks 43-yard field goal. 45-yard drive in 12 plays, 3:02. Pat Barnes converts two third-down passes, hitting Dameane Douglas for 9 yards when he needed 7 to start it and Bobby Shaw for 7 to get the Bears to the WSU 27.

THIRD QUARTER WSU 21, California 10

Marc Vera follows a trap block at left guard to go 9 yards untouched into the end zone. Longwell kick. 58-yard drive in 7 plays, 2:16. Kato Swerwanga, subbing for Derrick Gardner who was injured a play earlier, forces a Black fumble and Andy Jacobs recovers on the Cal 42. On third-and-6 from the WSU 44, Barnes hits Douglas on a flag route to the left for 26 yards at the Cougar 12.

FOURTH QUARTER WSU 21, California 16

Tony Gonzalez catches a 23-yard pass from a scrambling Barnes as a broken coverage leaves him wide open in the left side of the end zone. Pass failed. 88-yard, 13-play drive, 4:10. Again, Barnes had two big third-down completions, 13 yards to Shaw when he needed 9 at the start of the drive and 20 to Douglas when he needed 9 and faced an all-out blitz. The scoring pass came two plays after a 19-yard personal foul penalty for continual hand to the face by a Cal lineman pushed the Bears back to the 31 after a first down to the WSU 12 because the Cougars were called for a personal foul.
