Lewis & Clark Back Rambles For Records

Running back Jesse Ortiz rushed for a school-record 345 yards and scored four touchdowns as Lewis & Clark (3-3, 1-0 in the Columbia Football Association) beat winless University of Puget Sound (0-5, 0-1) 57-14 in Portland.

Ortiz also broke the CFA record of 315 yards set by Western Oregon’s Bill Volk in 1994. The old school record was held by Gary Grill, who gained 281 in 1957.

The Pioneers jumped to a 31-0 first-quarter lead as Ortiz scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards. He added a 21-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and a 58-yarder in the third period.

Puget Sound’s Daryl Wright, who had averaged 142 yards per game, was held to 106.

W. Washington 21, S. Oregon 14

In Ashland, Ore., Ryan Wiggins rushed for 207 yards and a touchdown as the second-ranked Vikings (5-0, 1-0 in the Columbia Football Association) stayed unbeaten by defeating the Raiders (3-2, 0-1).

Simon Fraser 47, CWU 23

Shawn Lee rushed for 168 yards and Steve Hamer-Jackson caught seven passes for 119 yards and two TDs in a CFA game as the Clansmen beat Central Washington for the first time since 1985 at Burnaby, British Columbia.
