Huskies Hope To End Road Woes

Jim Cour Associated Press

The No. 23 Washington Huskies are 4-0 at Husky Stadium - and still looking for their first road victory.

After overwhelming UCLA 41-21 behind Corey Dillon’s five-touchdown explosion, the Huskies (4-2 overall, 3-1 in the Pac-10) hope to get their first win away from home at Oregon next Saturday.

“This one will be a big one for us, a challenge to get after someone on the road,” freshman quarterback Brock Huard said.

The Huskies have lost to Oregon the past two seasons. And the Ducks were idle Saturday, meaning they will have two weeks to get ready for Washington.

“When you’re on the road, momentum is a big factor,” wide receiver and return specialist Jerome Pathon said. “You have to set the tone early on both offense and defense.”

The Ducks (3-4, 0-4) beat the Huskies 24-22 in Seattle last season as Washington’s John Wales missed two field goal attempts in the final 3:02 after Oregon led 24-0 at halftime. Wales had a 33-yard try blocked and missed a 36-yard attempt with 1:07 remaining, his third miss of the day.

Wales is still Washington’s kicker this season. He missed an extra point after the Huskies’ fifth touchdown against UCLA.

In 1994, Oregon won 31-20 in Eugene.

“We can win anywhere,” offensive tackle Tony Coats said. “We just have to prove it.”

“College football isn’t just a physical game,” defensive tackle Sekou Wiggs said. “It’s an emotional game, too. That’s why teams can play so differently from one week to the next.”
