Lefty Can Expect 700

James Madison basketball coach Lefty Driesell has been assured he can keep his job at least until he posts his 700th career victory, which likely would come no sooner than the 1997-98 season, according to a newspaper report.

Athletic director Don Lemish said he and university president Ronald E. Carrier discussed Driesell’s future throughout the summer and fall after the Dukes went 10-20 last season.

“The decision we have reached is that Lefty Driesell will be our basketball coach, and Lefty Driesell will win 700-plus games career-wise while he’s at JMU,” Lemish told the Daily News-Record.

Driesell, 64, has won 667 games.

Winfred Walton, one of two freshmen expected to start this season for Syracuse, has not been allowed to practice yet because of questions concerning his college boards.

The university is withdrawing Walton’s athletic scholarship pending a review of his SAT scores, which reportedly jumped 280 points between the first and second times he took the tests.
