Obituaries

Quinten Gross Lewiston

Visitation for Quinten A. Gross, 80, will be held today from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Service will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Colfax Cemetery in Colfax, Wash.

Mr. Gross, who was born in Kooskia, Idaho, died Saturday.

He grew up in Colfax, graduating from Colfax High School. He operated a concrete and gravel company during high school and continued the business after graduation.

Mr. Gross worked in the naval shipyards in Bremerton during World War II and lived in Portland before returning to Colfax.

He moved to Moscow in 1946 and operated a farm, retiring in 1962. He later moved to Valley Rehabilitation and Living Center in Lewiston. He was a member of the Moscow Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Viola; three sons, Gene Gross of Moscow, Gerald Gross of Tenino, Wash., and Raymond Gross of Bellevue, Wash.; a daughter, Jerrene Lowry of Lewiston; a sister, Velma Osborne of Montana; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Moscow Church of the Nazarene.

Elsie Davey Chewelah, Wash.

Service for Elsie May Davey, 86, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah. Burial will be at Chewelah Memorial Park.

Mrs. Davey, who died Saturday, was born in Stevensville, Mont.

She and her husband, Harry Davey, moved to Waitts Lake, Wash., and lived there until 1956, when he died. Mrs. Davey then moved to Chewelah.

She was one of the founding members of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary and donated more than 5,000 hours.

She is survived by two sons, Alan Davey of Newman Lake and Don Davey of Eugene, Ore.; three daughters, Lois Tigner and Mabel Barrans, both of Chewelah, and Alice Davey of Waitsburg, Wash.; three brothers, Harley Williamson of Victor, Mont., Jack Williamson of Valley, Wash., and Roy Williamson of Stevensville; four sisters, Vergie Bryan of Spokane, Grace Nash of Helena, Lucille Nicely of Missoula and Bess Raza, Sacramento, Calif.; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Long Term Care in Chewelah.

Gladys Presley Spokane

Vigil service for Gladys F. Presley, 89, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Presley, who died Sunday, was born in Quincy, Wash.

She had lived in Spokane for 22 years and was a homemaker.

Her husband of 39 years, John “Clarence” Presley, died in 1974.

She is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Ryser of Spokane; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Thomas More Catholic Church.

Ira Page Creston, Wash.

Visitation for Ira W. Page, 101, is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Strate Funeral Home in Davenport, Wash. Memorial service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport.

Born in Tulsa, Okla., Mr. Page died Sunday.

He was a well driller for many years in Eastern Washington and had lived in Davenport before moving to Creston.

He owned and operated a doughnut shop in Spokane and a small cafe and gas station in Creston.

Mr. Page served in the military during World War I and was wounded in France.

His wife of 63 years, Stella Page, died in 1988.

He is survived by two daughters, Fran Mangis of Creston, Wash., and Alice Welberry of Valley, Wash.; one brother, Ray Page of Spokane; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Creston Ambulance Fund or the Lincoln Hospital Foundation Endowment Fund.

Beatrice (Hanson) Anderson Spokane

Memorial service for Beatrice (Hanson) Anderson, 81, will be at 1 p.m. today at Spokane Valley Methodist Church. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson, who died Sunday at home, was born in Duluth, Minn. She moved to Spokane in 1921 with her parents and attended Lewis and Clark High School.

She married Walter Anderson in 1938. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of Spokane Valley Methodist Church, Magnolia Chapter 194 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Daughters of Nile, the Sons of Norway and the Spokane Valley Pioneers.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Chase of Happy Jack, Ariz., and Bonnie Dunlap of Scotts Valley, Calif.; a sister, June Dillon of Spokane; a brother, Harvey Hanson of Walnut Creek, Calif.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Larry Wetterau Spokane

Service for Larry W. Wetterau, 55, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Wetterau, who died Thursday, was born in Yakima and had lived in Spokane for 53 years.

He graduated from North Central High School and was a salesman with Grinnell.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 228, the Newport (Wash.) Eagles Lodge and the Wanderers Auto Club.

Mr. Wetterau is survived by his wife of 20 years, Norma Wetterau; a son, Shawn Wetterau of Pullman; a daughter, Kami Sumbureau of Deer Park; a sister, Karen Wetterau of Lititz, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Marie Loomis Medford, Ore.

Service for V. Marie Loomis, 66, will be at 1 p.m. today at Liberty Lake Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Loomis, who died Thursday, was born in Shelby, Mont.

She had lived in Spokane for 30 years and moved to Medford two years ago.

She was a member of the Arc.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including LaDonna Stowe of Medford and Jerry Carter of Spokane.

Dr. J.R. Miller Bonners Ferry

Service for Dr. J.R. Miller, 73, was Tuesday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Bonners Ferry. Private burial was held at Grandview Cemetery in Bonners Ferry. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Miller, who was born in St. Augustine, Fla., died Saturday from a heart attack.

He served as a medic in the Air Force during World War II, later graduating from Pacific Union College and Loma Linda University Medical Center in California.

He interned at Portland Adventist Hospital in 1954 before moving to Kentucky to begin a general medicine practice. He later moved to Sacramento, Calif., and operated a private practice for 16 years until 1975.

Dr. Miller moved to Bonners Ferry in 1975 and worked in the emergency room at Boundary County Community Hospital for three years.

He was a pilot and an amateur radio operator and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Bernita; two daughters, Karen Ryan of Oregon and Kathryn Boss of Coeur d’Alene; one sister, Marilyn Cook of Chewelah, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Harold Halter Rockford

Memorial service for Harold L. Halter, 68, is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Fairfield. A reception will follow at the home of Ralph and Loretta Stevens in Rockford. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Halter, who died Friday from complications during open-heart surgery, was born on the family farm near Worley, Idaho.

He was a retired farmer and had still lived on the family farm.

He was a member of the board of directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank for more than 34 years and served as president of the board from 1967 to 1973.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Margaret; four daughters, Diana Howison of Burbank, Calif., Loretta Stevens of Rockford, Barbara Ahmad of Lodi, Calif., and Ellen Halter of the Spokane Valley; a son, Howard Halter of Bothell, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

William Galvin Spokane

No service will be held for William C. Galvin, 83, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Galvin, who died Sunday, was born in Elwood City, Pa.

He was a World War II Air Force veteran and a tail gunner in a B-17 with the 8th Air Force.

He worked in construction and was a former resident of Priest Lake, Idaho, and Liberty Lake. He had lived in Spokane for 11 years.

He is survived by three nieces, Phyllis Kahle, Elizabeth Reynolds and Constance Conoway, all of Liberty Lake.

Dorothea ‘Teda’ Graham Spokane

Service for Dorothea M. Graham, 81, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Concordia, Kan., Mrs. Graham died Sunday. She was a 46-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish.

Her husband of 49 years, Alvin Graham, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Graham is survived by three daughters, Patty Guymon of Seattle, Marie Graham of Everett and Suzan Ward of Clarkston, Wash.; three sons, Edwin Graham of Lewiston, Joseph Graham of Spokane and David Graham of Everett; a brother, Edwin Betournay of Boise; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Bonnie Rector Spokane

Memorial service for Bonnie A. Rector, 79, is set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Born in Pueblo, Colo., Mrs. Rector died Saturday.

She moved to Spokane 27 years ago from Torrance, Calif.

She worked as an administrative assistant for Horizon Federal Credit Union for many years, retiring in the early 1980s.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Harry Rector; two sons, Nick Lorentz of Spokane and Jim Lorentz of California; a stepson, Bob Rector of California; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Geraldine Martinson Spokane

A private service was held for Geraldine V. Martinson, 80.

Mrs. Martinson, a 70-year Spokane resident, died Saturday.

Born in Thornton, Wash., she graduated from Lewis and Clark High School.

She worked for Decorator Service Co. as a bookkeeper for 20 years, retiring in 1981.

She also assisted her husband, Stanley Martinson, as a bookkeeper, in operating Stan’s Speaker Repair.

Her husband died in 1990.

Mrs. Martinson is survived by a sister, Frances Christensen of Hot Springs, Ark.

Anne Puthoff Chewelah, Wash.

Vigil service for Anne E. Puthoff, 83, will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church in Chewelah. Service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Chewelah Catholic Cemetery. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Puthoff, who was born in Cottonwood, Idaho, died Sunday.

She was a 60-year Chewelah resident, and worked in the kitchen at St. Joseph’s Hospital for six years. She was also the custodian at her church for many years.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

Her husband, Frank Puthoff, died in 1992.

Survivors include four sons, Bernard Puthoff of Gresham, Ore., Darrell Puthoff of Loon Lake, Wash., George Puthoff of Carlsbad, Calif., and Jim Puthoff of Chewelah; three daughters, Theresa Puthoff and Juliann Wohrle, both of Spokane, and Marie Kehl of Anchorage, Alaska; five brothers, Bernard and John Seubert, both of Cottonwood, Dominic Seubert of Palm Bay, Fla., and Gene and Matt Seubert, both of Spokane; three sisters, Bernadette Tipton and Dorothy Kelley, both of Cottonwood, and Phyllis Crist of New Mexico; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Verna Gahley Spokane

Memorial service for Verna Scott Gahley, 77, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Unity Church of Truth. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gahley, who died Saturday, was born in Ritzville, Wash.

She had lived in Spokane for 56 years and was a retired teacher. She taught in Clarkston, Washougal, Wash., and Spokane.

She was a volunteer at Crosswalk and Unity Church of Truth.

Her husband, Kenneth Gahley, died in 1992.

Mrs. Gahley is survived by a daughter, Lisa Gahley-Jenson of Palmer, Alaska; two sisters, Anna King of Pullman and Alma Luiten of Ritzville; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Irma Kelley Spangle

Service for Irma Marie Kelley, 75, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Hennessey-smith Funeral Home. Burial Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Kelley, who was born in Seattle, died Saturday.

She served in the Navy with the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in Seattle from 1942-1944.

She had lived in Spangle for 44 years and was a member of the Plaza Grange.

Her husband of 22 years, Joseph Kelley, died in 1969.

She is survived by four sons, Kirk Kelley of Spokane, Kevin Kelley of Reno, Nev., and Jerry Kelley and Brian Kelley, both of Spangle; three daughters, Gloria Kelley of Spokane, Gigi Brewer of Nine Mile Falls and Gayle Ottosen of Fairfield; a brother, Joseph Youngstrom of Woodland Hills, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Mildred Carr Spokane

No service will be held for Mildred L. Carr, at her request. There will be private cremation. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Carr, 87, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

She graduated from North Central High School and attended Washington State University.

She was a 30-year employee with the city of Spokane purchasing department.

She was a member of St. Monica’s Guild and several bridge clubs.

Survivors include a cousin, Avis Brown.
