Small Plane Lands On Store’s Roof

Associated Press

A small plane crash-landed on the roof of a supermarket Tuesday morning, injuring the pilot and causing minor damage to the roof.

No injuries were reported in the store after the 10 a.m. crash.

The pilot, alone in the single-engine Cessna, was trying to reach Venice airport, less than a mile away, but the plane lost power and crashed on the roof of the Publix supermarket, the Sarasota County sheriff’s department said.

The plane bounced and skidded along the roof, coming to rest against the building’s parapet, which appeared to have kept the plane from dropping off the building.

The plane was heavily damaged.

The pilot’s injuries were not believed to be lifethreatening, authorities said.
