Workers Will Re-Check Election Numbers

Prompted by the Sandinista candidate’s charges of a miscount, election workers agreed Tuesday to double-check ballot tallies before declaring a conservative businessman Nicaragua’s next president.

Official results still trickling in from Sunday’s vote appeared to give Arnoldo Aleman enough votes to avoid a run-off against Sandinista candidate Daniel Ortega, who was president from 1984 to 1990.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who headed an international observer mission, told reporters “There was a consensus of observers that the elections were open, fair and honest.”
