Guitar Music At Auntie’s

Don Adair Correspondent

Two young guitarists from two corners of the world will play the auditorium at Auntie’s Bookstore Friday.

Brian Gore is a Californian whose music is said to explore the “boundaries between folk, modern music and jazz.” Antonio Calogero is a classically trained Italian player who also is earning a reputation as a master of the American steel string, or “fingerstyle,” guitar.

Gore’s music is “expressive and sincere,” raved the Victory Music Review. “His guitar work shows depth and breadth. His breathtaking arpeggios speak to the heart. They float. They soothe. His work shows the blending of many influences.”

The San Francisco-based musician has performed with such players as Peppino D’Agostino, Peter Finger and Alex DeGrassi. He’s reputed to have a ready wit, which he displays in concert, and his debut CD, “Path of Least Resistance,” is available on Mesa/Blue Moon.

Calogero, too, is influenced by American folk and jazz. His third CD, “La Rosa Del Deserto,” is the work of a disciplined player and features the assistance of Windham Hill’s Mike Marshall, along with Finger.

A regular performer on the European festival circuit for nearly 14 years, Calogero has only recently begun to play in the United States. Guitarist Ralph Towner says of Calogero: “Antonio has an original style which is very special and most important to have, as that is a natural thing not always evident in musicians.”

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, available at Auntie’s, Dutch’s, Petrucelly’s, Street Music and the Sound Hole.
