Gsl At A Glance

Gonzaga Prep 33, University 7

Key play

University scored on the opening drive. On Prep’s first play the Titans recovered a fumble on the Bullpups’ 20. On the next play Damien Ramierez intercepted Rob Bartlett, and with a facemask penalty, Prep started a drive on its 33 en route to the game-tying drive.

Star of the game

Tyson Thielman carried 36 times for 291 yards, the second-best game in city history, and four touchdowns.

Notable

Thielman had one more yard than Robert Barlow picked up for Lewis and Clark in ‘93 but he was well behind the league best of 331 by Archie Grant of Ferris in 1970… . Thielman had 92 yards at halftime but scored on runs of 35 and 57 yards in the second half… . Jason Berger of U-Hi, the No. 2 receiver, was knocked unconscious early in the third quarter… . Prep only completed 1 of 6 passes, the first one Kevin O’Connell attempted, good for 16 yards on a third-and-5 to keep the Bullpups’ first scoring drive alive.

Next opponent

Thursday at Albi, Prep plays North Central at 5 p.m. and University plays Shadle Park at 7:30.

Mead 19, Lewis and Clark 3

Key play

Twice late in the fourth quarter, trailing by 10, LC got close, missing a 22-yard field goal, and then after forcing a punt, throwing an interception from the Mead 19.

Star of the game

Both defenses did a good job keeping the opposing offenses in check, but Scott McGlocklin probably broke but at least tied a league record with a 99.5-yard touchdown run to seal the victory with 2:40 to play. He finished with 270 yards.

Notable

The Panthers scored on the first possession, McGlocklin going over left guard on the fifth play of the game for a 34-yard TD run. Mead’s defense held LC to a net 26 yards rushing… . LC was without starting tackle John Powers, who broke an arm in practice… . Ryan Spidahl picked off three passes for Mead.

Next opponent

LC has another crucial game, facing Central Valley in Friday’s 8:30 Albi game. Mead has a bye.

Shadle Park 30, CV 14

Star of the game

Kris Walters directed the Highlanders’ offense and forced a fumble early in the second half that allowed them to push the lead to 27-7.

Notable

Shadle Park, 4-2 in league games, hasn’t won four league games since tying for the GSL title and making the state semifinals in 1991… . A win next week against LC could still get the Bears, 4-3, into the playoffs because LC would be 4-3 facing a season finale against Gonzaga Prep. They play at East Valley the final week in a non-league game… . The report from CV indicated Shadle had two near-80-yard scoring drives in the first quarter while the Bears had just four offensive snaps.

Next opponent

CV plays LC Friday, Shadle has U-Hi Thursday.

Pullman 28, Rogers 7

After the teams traded first-quarter touchdowns, the Greyhounds dominated, piling up 301 of their 383 total yards to open a 19-7 lead. Erin Linehan, who hit Forest Hurlbert for the first TD, hit Hurlbert for a 50-yarder for his third scoring pass to cap the second-quarter outburst. Linehan finished with four TD passes and 220 yards, hitting 18 of 30. Hurlbert had five catches for 11 yards in the first half. Mike Dorton, who scored the Rogers TD, had 191 yards on 27 carries. The Pirates play Ferris Friday in the early Albi game.
