Quick Kicks

Rub a little salt on that wound

Make Barry Switzer the man who finally ended the public feud between Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson by standing up to Jones’ pressure to run up the score on Johnson.

He did it the same way Jimmy might have - by telling Jones who runs the football operation.

“I’m the coach, he’s the owner. I make the decisions on the field,” Switzer said after telling Jones that no, the Cowboys weren’t going to turn a 29-10 win over Johnson and the Miami Dolphins into a 36-10 rout by going for a meaningless touchdown with two minutes left.

The confrontation of sorts took place during the first meeting of Jones and Johnson since their divorce in the spring of 1994 following two Super Bowl wins. The Cowboys, up by 19 points, had a first down on the Miami 7 and Jones was in his customary “Coach Jones” position, next to Switzer on the sideline.

Jones wanted seven more, Switzer didn’t. Jones later conceded his coach made the right decision by telling Troy Aikman to kneel down three times.

Young, Freeman sidelined

San Francisco quarterback Steve Young, already hobbled by a groin injury, sustained a concussion on the third play of Sunday’s game against the Houston Oilers. He was released from a hospital after an examination and returned to the Astrodome in time to see the 49ers win.

Green Bay’s depleted receiving corps took another hit when Antonio Freeman broke his left forearm in his first start for the injured Robert Brooks.

If you build it …

If Detroit and Wayne County voters approve a proposed domed stadium, the NFL will stage a Super Bowl there.

That was the promise NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue made. Tagliabue said the the NFL will award Detroit a Super Bowl game within one or two years of the opening of the stadium in downtown Detroit.

Oilers will stay awhile

The Nashville-bound Oilers will play next season in Houston and the following year in Tennessee, owner Bud Adams said.

Adams said he would not try to buy out the last year of his Astrodome lease for an early move to Tennessee. Such a buyout would have to be approved by mayor Bob Lanier, Harris County Judge Robert Eckels and Astrodome USA owner Drayton McLane Jr.

“I expect to play here in 1997,” Adams said. “Mayor Lanier has already said he is not going to let me out of (the lease).”

The Oilers have an agreement to move to Nashville, but nothing in the deal specifies that they have to move before a new stadium is ready in 1999.

Streaks

The Packers have scored first in all eight of their games . … Atlanta placekicker Morten Andersen has scored in 198 consecutive games, extending his NFL record. … The Lions’ Barry Sanders had only 47 yards on 16 carries against the Giants. It marked the first time in his career Sanders has gone six straight games without gaining 100 yards.

If only Congress was this efficient

Washington’s offense maintained its perfect record in the red zone in Sunday’s victory over the Indianapolis Colts. The Redskins scored on each of their four trips inside the Colts’ 20, with three touchdowns and one field goal. On the season, the Redskins are 21-for-21 in the red zone, with 15 TDs and six field goals.
