New Schuck’s Opens; Old Store Will Continue

Schuck’s Auto Supply has decided not to close its store at Bowdish and Sprague when it opens a new store at Adams and Sprague today.

The company earlier announced plans to close the Schuck’s at 11606 E. Sprague and transfer employees from that store to the new, larger store at 14617 E. Sprague. The company intended to open another Schuck’s store in the west Valley area sometime next spring.

District manager Mark Merritt said the company decided Friday to keep the Bowdish store open to “service the existing market.” The company still plans to research if there’s a need for a third Schuck’s store in the west Valley area, Merritt said.

For the store at Adams and Sprague, the company will hire eight to 10 employees, some of whom will be transfers from other Schuck’s locations, Merritt said.

Divine’s changes brands

Motorists will notice a change at Divine’s gas stations throughout Spokane. The company has switched from Cenex to Shell gasoline at all six of its stations, including its Valley location at Pines and Mission.

The reason for the change was to attract more people with Shell’s national brand name, said Debbie Cornell, convenience store manager for Divine’s.

“Officials from Shell came to the area and asked us if we’d be interested,” said Cornell. All the stations will be updated with the Shell colors and logo. Gas pumps will also be renovated to allow motorists to pay at the pump with a credit or ATM card, Cornell said.

In addition to the gas change, Cornell said three stations, including the Valley, will have convenience stores.

One of the automotive bays was removed from the Valley station in order to expand the amount of space dedicated to the convenience store, Cornell said. The store, called Tully’s to Go, will have a deli that serves breaded chicken and mushrooms as well as corn dogs and sub sandwiches.

Bedding store opening

Mattress Land, based in Springfield, Ore., is opening a bedding store in the Valley in mid-November.

Company president John Gregg said the retail chain has leased 7,200 square feet of space at 13524 E. Sprague near Pool World.

The store will carry all major mattress brands, including Simmons, Sealy and Stearns and Foster.

Approximately five full-time employees will be hired, Gregg said.

The Valley store will be the first Mattress Land store in Washington state. The company, which has stores in California and Oregon, is planning to open a second Spokane location on the North Side.
