Cougs Win Volleyball Tourney

Washington State University captured its own Cougar Challenge Tournament Saturday by defeating Idaho State and Southern Illinois in 3-0 matches.

WSU, ranked eighth in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 Preseason Poll, took the tournament title for the fifth time in seven years. Announced attendance at Bohler Gym was 997.

Idaho State finished second with a 3-1 record and Tulsa broke its two-season winless streak by posting two victories in four matches to take third place. Gonzaga (1-3) placed fourth and Southern Illinois (0-4) was fifth.

WSU All-American Sarah Silvernail tallied 77 kills in nine games (8.55 kills per game average) and was selected the tournament most valuable player.

Chiefs tickets

Tickets for the Spokane Chiefs 36 regular-season Western Hockey League games go on sale Tuesday.

The Chiefs host the Tri-City Americans in their Arena opener on Sept. 28.

Season tickets and other ticket packages can be picked up beginning Friday morning at the Chiefs offices in the Arena, director of business operations Don Jamieson said.

Idaho prep football

Orofino defeated Priest River 25-0, at Orofino, in the season opener for both teams.

Jarel Bruce scored on touchdown runs of 21 yards and 1 yard to pace Orofino.

Allen Rogers had 10 carries for 58 yards and Joey Young 8 carries for 27 yards for Priest River.

Also, Kellogg defeated Lapwai 39-6. No details of that game were provided.
