Holiday Weekend Marred By Tacoma I-5 Pileup

Associated Press

The long Labor Day weekend ended much as it had started - with a pileup of vehicles on Interstate 5.

A seven-car fender-bender occurred on northbound I-5 near the Tacoma Dome at about 1:45 p.m. Monday, sending nine people to area hospitals with injuries ranging from cuts to broken bones, said Lt. Bob Willis of the Tacoma Fire Department.

Willis said the cause of the chain-reaction accident was similar to Friday’s accident, which resulted in a 42-car pileup on southbound I-5 near Federal Way.

Thirty people were taken to local hospitals after Friday’s pileup, which was triggered by a three-car fender-bender on a rain-slick roadway.

Both accidents closed the freeway for hours.
