Consider Symbolic, Literal Meaning

Nancy Huseby Bloom

Dear Nancy: I had this dream two months ago. Randy is a friend of mine who I haven’t seen for several years. Greg was a co-worker who I was very attracted to but didn’t get involved with because I heard negative reports regarding how he treated women. I left that job, but before leaving, I told Greg that I was attracted to him. I haven’t seen or heard from him since I left. - Carol

It’s winter and there is snow on the ground. My son and I are in our big, white house with big windows. My bedroom window is very big and my venetian blinds aren’t quite long enough. I feel someone is watching me when I undress to go to bed. One night, Randy comes over to watch TV. My son is asleep and appears to be a few years older than he is now. Randy stays late and before he leaves, he says, “Watch out for Greg.” I am shocked and I ask him to repeat his message. He says, “Watch out for Greg. He’s been watching you from the street, looking into your bedroom window at night.”

I feel afraid and lock the door after Randy leaves. Later, I hear a knock on the door and when I look out the peephole I see it is Greg. I see his car at the curb with its lights on. He’s dressed nice and he’s smiling. I feel very afraid and wake up.

Dear Carol: There are several ways we can examine this dream, but the one that comes most to mind is to look at it in a literal way. On the phone you told me that you felt like this was a warning dream so let’s examine it from that perspective.

The time of the dream is the future. The fact that your son is older in your dream than he is in waking life shows us this.

Your good friend, Randy, acts as your protector and tells you to watch out for Greg. Randy could represent the part of your psyche that is intuitive and perceptive at the higher levels of consciousness.

We all have abilities beyond the five senses. It is our attention to and acknowledgment of these abilities that will bring them out in the open. While we are sleeping, the barriers to this knowledge collapse and intuition, extrasensory perception and telepathic communication can enter our dream world.

We can also look at the dream in a more symbolic way. Are you in a situation in your life where you feel exposed and vulnerable? Are you afraid of being in love and what that means in terms of intimacy? Are you feeling “stalked” or invaded by thoughts and feelings of attraction for this man? This dream provides you with lots of information, Carol. Keep your eyes open, trust your instincts and let your dreams be your guide.

Tips for readers: Last week we talked about how dreams tend to chart the course and severity of illnesses. During recovery from a serious illness, dreams may be full of symbols of rebirth, rebuilding of structures, and benevolent, supportive people.

Through illness and accidents we are forced to acknowledge that we are mortal. Dream work can become the basis for treating and healing ourselves on the inner levels.

Resolving long-standing conflicts and sharing our inner world with others close to us can facilitate both the recovery and the dying process. By sharing our dreams during these critical times, we not only connect deeply with others but allow our loved ones to support and care for our spiritual and emotional lives.
