Two New Publications To Track Prep Football In State

Just in time for the new season, there are two ambitious projects aimed at high school football fans.

The first is a done deal.

Scott Butterworth, a sportswriter in Yakima, has published Evergreen Football, a magazine devoted to college and high school football in Washington.

Besides touching on all colleges, including in-depth reports and features on the three largest schools, there are also similar sections for each high school classification.

Butterworth rounded up a strong stable of reporters, including three from The Spokesman-Review. Dave Boling, who has since moved on, did Washington State, Jim Meehan handled Eastern Washington, and Chris Derrick covered Class B.

The magazine isn’t perfect. Butterworth missed a lot of the schedules for area teams, including the GSL. And, not all schools bothered to respond to reporters who were compiling the information. However, it is the most ambitious project undertaken to preview high school football in Washington and is a good read.

The magazine is on sale in many area outlets. The cover price is $3.95. It also can be purchased from Butterworth Publishing for $5, postpaid. The address is 1500 West Mead No. 34, Yakima, WA 98902.

The other project is the Washington Prep Football Report.

Ron Newberry, former prep sports editor for the Tacoma News-Tribune, is tackling a beast that has run over tacklers before. Newberry plans to mail or fax weekly reports to subscribers. His report includes highlights, standings, recruiting updates, plays and players of the week and notes.

Others have tried to provide standings and statistics on a weekly basis in the past but couldn’t keep up. Newberry is using his contacts to network the information and get it out in a timely fashion.

The report, which begins with a preview next week, is available by calling (206) 581-4072.
