HEISMAN WATCH

Koy Detmer, QB, Colorado: Completed 31 of 42 passes, including 14 in a row, for 364 yards and two touchdowns.

Curtis Enis, RB, Penn St.: Rushed for 104 yards and one touchdown.

Danny Wuerrfel, QB, Florida: Completed 15 of 16 passes for 267 yards and two TDs, setting a school record with a 94 percent completion rate.

Peyton Manning, QB, Tennessee: Threw for 288 yards on 16-of-28 passing, including two TDs and one interception against UCLA.

NOTABLE

Byron Hanspard gained a Texas Tech-record 272 yards rushing on 29 carries.

Ryan Clement of Miami completed 13 of 14 passes for 196 yards and four TDs in a 52-6 rout of The Citadel.

Clemson’s defense recorded 12 sacks against Furman. Georgia Tech’s C.J. Williams gained 148 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns.

Alabama’s defense allowed two plays for positive yardage in the second half of the Tide’s 20-10 victory over Southern Mississippi.

Nebraska’s Mike Minter intercepted two passes, scoring one touchdown and setting up another.

Louisiana State’s Kevin Faulk, ran for 246 yards, returned four punts for 106 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Kansas State’s Brian Kavanagh completed 19 of 22 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns, and Marlon Charles rushed for 195 yards and two more scores.

Montana wide receiver Joe Douglass, a transfer from Oregon State, caught six passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns against his former school.

Ohio State freshman Michael Wiley touched the ball three times against Rice and scored on pass plays of 51 and 60 yards and a 49-yard reverse.

Southern California quarterbacks Brad Otten and Matt Koffler were 15 of 23 with 428 yards and no interceptions in the Trojans’ 55-3 pounding of Illinois.

QUOTABLE

“It was very difficult for me to tell (the players) that this was going to be my last year. But I told them that life goes on, and I could only hope that we’d all be better for having known each other,” longtime Yale coach Carm Cozza upon announcing his retirement.

Cozza’s departure will mark the end of an era during which Yale won 10 Ivy League championships and 177 games (against 111 defeats and 5 ties). His retirement will take effect following this season, his 32nd at Yale.
