Storm Shuts Down Memorials

Compiled From Wire Services

The Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall and Jefferson Memorial all shut down Sunday as the District of Columbia received a parting slap from Hurricane Fran.

The memorials themselves were not threatened, but getting to them was difficult because of flooding on low-lying streets.

Flood waters from the Virginia mountains surged into the Potomac River throughout the day, causing the river to swell 11 feet above flood levels in some areas.

No injuries were reported.
