Boy In Satisfactory Condition After Accidentally Burning Self

Gita Sitaramiah Staff writer

A north Spokane boy who suffered serious burns while playing with matches and lighter fluid last weekend was in satisfactory condition at a Seattle hospital Monday.

Six-year-old Dustin Jones was flown Saturday to Harborview Medical Center.

The boy’s father heard him yelling for help in their yard at 9605 N. Colfax about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, family members said. Raymond Jones called 911 after finding his son badly burned.

“His dad caught him three times this past week with matches and disciplined him for it,” said Patti Stevenson, the boy’s aunt. “I guess this is a lesson he’ll never forget.”

The boy suffered burns to his head, arms, legs and abdomen, said Michael Zambryski, a Spokane Fire Department investigator.

Dustin, a first-grader at Evergreen Elementary, should recover from the second- and third-degree burns to his face, but he may need plastic surgery on his legs, a family member said.

He is expected to remain at Harborview for three to four weeks and may have to return later for surgery, Stevenson said.

Dustin’s mother told Stevenson the boy’s condition is improving daily.

“She said he was finally able to open his eyes, and he was watching cartoons,” Stevenson said.
