Ottawa Survives

Compiled From Wire Services

The Ottawa Rough Riders, a 120-year-old franchise on the verge of failing, will complete the Canadian Football League season, The Canadian Press reported.

The news agency, citing an unidentified source, said the decision came after club president Jim Durrell, the former Ottawa mayor, convinced league officials of his rescue effort.

Team employees were discreetly seen giving one another high-fives after a nearly 3-hour conference call between Durrell and the CFL board of governors.

The CP said its source gave a thumbs up when asked about the future of the club and later acknowledged the team’s survival.

Two weeks ago, the league set Monday as the deadline for the club to get its finances together. It told the Riders to raise $1.6 million or face folding. The league had supported the team with $1.8 million through August.

Tommie Frazier, the Montreal Alouettes’ backup quarterback, who led Nebraska to consecutive national NCAA championships, will be sidelined indefinitely while he recovers from pneumonia.
