Yanks Overcome Gooden’s Lapse

Cecil Fielder, helped by a hard slide from Tim Raines, drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning in his return to Tiger Stadium, and the visiting New York Yankees overcame Dwight Gooden’s shortest start ever to defeat Detroit 9-8 Tuesday night.

Defensive replacement Ruben Rivera made a diving catch in the ninth that preserved the victory.

Orioles 5, White Sox 1

Baltimore

David Wells pitched 7-1/3 solid innings and Rafael Palmeiro hit his 35th homer as Baltimore moved ahead of Chicago in the wild-card race.

The Orioles’ fourth straight victory gave them a half-game lead in the wild-card derby.

Brewers 11, Red Sox 10

Boston

Jeff Cirillo homered twice and drove in a career-high four runs as Milwaukee dealt another blow to Boston’s playoff chances.

Boston has lost four consecutive games, including two to Milwaukee, and is 5-1/2 have games behind Baltimore in the wild-card race.

Will Clark hit a three-run homer as Texas won its fifth straight overall and eighth in a row over Toronto.

Darren Oliver (12-6) gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings as the A.L. West-leading Rangers moved a season-high 22 games over .500.

Cleveland

Manny Ramirez hit a two-out, three-run homer as Cleveland scored four times in the ninth inning to beat California.

Athletics 7, Twins 0

Minneapolis

Dave Telgheder pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout and Ernie Young pounded Minnesota with a three-run homer.

Telgheder (3-6) tied a career high with seven strikeouts and walked three as he won for only the second time in his last seven decisions.
