Cholera Scare Closes Philippines School

Compiled From Wire Services

Health officials fearing a cholera outbreak closed a school in the southern Philippines after more than 60 students were hospitalized with acute diarrhea.

Provincial health officer Dr. Jose Cabuguas said the students were all studying at a Seventh Day Adventist school in Bukidnon province.

The students, who fell ill Thursday, were immediately hospitalized, but most were released after their illness was shown to be severe diarrhea, not cholera, Cabuguas said Friday.

An examination showed that the students were sickened by an amoeba spread by ill-prepared vegetables, he said.
