CV Beats Rogers Despite Mistakes
Youthful exhuberance led to youthful mistakes, but it couldn’t hide the potentional on Central Valley’s young football team.
“We only had four of 22 players where it wasn’t their first start,” said Bears coach Rick Giampietri of Thursday’s 24-14 win over Rogers. “You don’t know what’s going to happen.”
What happened was more than 200 yards in penalties and four fumbles that dulled CV’s attack.
However, it couldn’t dull the sheen on the offensive debuts of junior Garrett Graham and sophomore Tyree Clowe, in particular.
Graham, at tailback, carried 13 times for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” he said. “It just happened. I was expecting to play fullback.”
Clowe, doubtful until Thursday afternoon that he would even play, came up big on both sides of the ball, including a touchdown pass reception.
“Tyree had a lower back sprain,” said Giampietri. “When he said he felt fine we played him on defense. As he loosened up he played offense. That’s a pretty good combination in the backfield.”
Senior Nate Bartlett got the start and a solid effort at quarterback.
The win was important prior to future games against favorites Gonzaga Prep and Mead in successive weeks.
Giampietri is convinced this team, with Graham and Clowe in the backfield, can ultimately run the ball against most teams in the league.
If they eliminate the mistakes.
“We’re a young team, it’s going to take awhile,” said Graham. “They were mental mistakes, but we came back from them.”
All-Valley cross country
The 18th annual All-Valley cross country meet, featuring eight schools, begins at 9 a.m. this morning at Liberty Lake County Park.
Returning champions include sophomores Sean McLachlan of West Valley, Devon VanDyne of U-Hi, juniors Eric Gorton of WV and Anne Peterson of CV, seniors Robbie Warnock of CV and Jessica Riehle of WV.
Schools entered are the four Valley schools and Freeman, Lake City, Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene.
Races include freshmen and sophomore girls, followed at halfhour intervals by freshman-sophomore boys, junior-senior girls, junior-senior boys, a one-mile fun run for junior high age and younger and an alumni-coaches race.
Finalists set at Valley View
Finalists for the Valley View Ladies Golf Club championship were determined after second round of the tournament.
Joyce Jacobs and Pat Thompson will play for the title next week.
First flight finalists are Sylvia Perkins and Edith Rains. Second flight finalists are Emma Long and Margie Bratcher.
During medal play, Mary Ann Barham shot 51 in A flight. Marcia Spohn and Jacobs netted 35.
In B flight, Thompson shot 50 and Rains netted 32. And in C flight, Donna Festerson and Laura Odette shot 61, while Patti McAtee netted 36.
Hangman Captains Cup playoff
Finalists in the Hangman Valley Captain’s Cup played off last week for overall champion and needed a tiebreaker to decide one.
Billie Etter, Fran Nord, Marie Nelson, Margaret Brashears and Pam Anderson were the five finalists.
Etter, Nelson and Anderson ended in a three-way tie, needing the USGA rule to determine the outcome.
Etter won with a 40 gross and 33 net. Nelson finished at 50 gross and 36 net. Anderson shot 57 and 37 net.
During play of the day, golfers scored their par three and five holes and used half handicap.
In A flight, Fran Nord netted 34. In B, Nelson had 38-1/2. In C, Marge Harden netted 35-1/2. And in D, Anderson netted 38.
Painted Hills medal play
It was medal play as usual for ladies of the Painted Hills Golf Club.
Pat Casey had low gross 48 in A flight and Sue Greany netted 35. Virginia Lemmer had 49 in B flight and Clare Herman netted 32, including a birdie on the fourth hole.
In C flight Lolly Neff shot 54 and Margie Roark netted 33. In D flight Cindee Corick shot 60 and Nancy Moore netted 31.
Lori Gray chipped in for a birdie on the second hole, Ottilie Schreiener chipped in on five and Jan Bernhart on seven.
Liberty Cup ends in tie
September leg of the Liberty Cup for Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Golf Club ended in a tie.
Glenda Scott and Betty Harmon each netted 69 and in the putting contest, Jean Fulks and Barb Midkiff each took 30.
During medal play, Etter and Sandy Mooney tied in A flight with low gross 90. Scott shot 91 in B, Harmon shot 102 in C. There was a tie in D between Myrna Neubauer and Barb Hafner at 111.
Net winners were Jackie Shea with 72 in A, Fulks with 73 in B and Margaret Brashears with 75 in C.
Nine-hole medal play
During medal play for Liberty Lake Ladies 9-Hole Club, Elaine Tai shot low-gross 52 in A flight.
Polly Soderquist had 60 in B, Thompson had 56 in C including a chip-in on 16. Deanna Hauser had 65 in D.
Net leaders were Audrey Vanos with 35 in A, Lorraine Martin with 46 in B, and Joan Rassley with 34 in C, including a chip-in on 10. Betty Trembly had a chip-in on 12.
