Doctors Separate Girls Joined At Heads

Compiled From Wire Services

Doctors on Friday separated Siamese twins joined at the top of their heads, though the infant girls who had seen each other only in the mirror still face years of surgeries to restore their skulls.

Doris and Bessy Gonzales were both in stable condition after surgeons at Primary Children’s Medical Center separated the girls’ skulls, blood vessels and scar tissue in a 10-hour operation.

If all goes well, the girls could be discharged from the hospital in a month, doctors said, although they may have learning disabilities because their brains have not developed properly.
