Cigar Off On New Streak

Compiled From Wire Services

Cheered every step of the way as he charged through the stretch, Cigar rebounded from the loss that snapped his winning streak with a victory in the $500,000 Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park in New York.

Cigar, the 1-5 favorite, won by 4 lengths over L’Carriere, in 1:47.06 for the 1-1/8 miles.

Also at Belmont Park, Diplomatic Jet took the lead in the upper stretch and won the $400,000 Man o’War over Arlington Million winner Mecke, who rallied from last with a quarter-mile remaining.

Chris Loseth booted Name for Norm to victory in the $50,000 Northwest Stallion Stakes on a damp afternoon at Emerald Downs in Auburn. One bettor, Tom Strickland, of Monroe, won $64,700.80 in the Pick6 exotic wager.
