Vikings Settle For 2nd At Clarkston

Coeur d’Alene finished second Saturday at an eight-team volleyball invitational in Clarkston, Wash., missing the title by a point here and there.

The Vikings fell to Washington’s defending State A champion Colfax, 9-15, 16-14, 17-15 in the title match.

CdA won once and drew twice in pool play, then beat Riverside (Wash.) and St. Maries in playoffs.

Alicia Adams served perfectly on 63 attempts as St. Maries finished third.

Bridget O’Dwyer had 31 kills and 20 blocks, and Jamie Hammes 36 kills for the Lumberjacks, who beat Kennewick 15-10, 15-9 in the match for third place.

St. Maries’ lone loss was to CdA, 15-13, 16-14. The Lumberjacks, who registered three wins, drew with Kennewick (to open the tourney) and Colfax.

Sandpoint finished second in the consolation round of the Walla Walla (Wash.) Invitational. No details were reported.

Jacey Vogrig’s 14 kills and Katie Peterson’s 15 assists led visiting Priest River to a 15-7, 15-13 Intermountain League win over Moscow.

The Spartans trailed the second game 13-10, but Jennifer Reed served out the match. Reed finished with 11 assists and five kills.

Girls soccer

Laura Minnich scored three goals and Holly Davidson had two goals and two assists to lead visiting Moscow (2-2) to a 9-0 North Idaho League win over Post Falls.

The Bears have outscored league opponents 16-6.

Also in the league, Jenny Wells and Elisa Scherb scored as Sandpoint (3-0-2) won 2-0 and handed visiting Lewiston its first loss .

The Bulldogs held Lewiston to five shots on goal.

At Bonners Ferry (0-4), Cara Barnes scored three times in the first 53 minutes and Dani Reed added a late goal to lead visiting Lakeland (1-3) over the Badgers 4-0 in another league match.

Sheila Hanson and Malea Schumacher scored to lead East Valley (1-1) over visiting Lake City 2-0 in a non-leaguer.

Cross country

Lake City’s Max Schmitt and St. Maries’ Aree Stone won the freshman races at the All-Valley Invitational at Liberty Lake County Park.

Schmitt finished the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 43 seconds, 25 seconds up on the field. Stone’s 21:02 led the pack by 35 seconds.

Other top efforts by area runners: Charlie Miller, LC, seventh (17:40), sophomore boys; Mike Keith, LC, fifth (17:45), junior boys; Jeremy Badgett, SM, seventh (17:44), senior boys; Libby Gerber, LC, fifth (22:12), sophomore girls; and Christy Tackett, LC, eighth (21:48), senior girls.

Moscow’s Kenny Benjamin and Yvonne Shea won individual titles at the Kellogg Invitational.

Benjamin finished in 16:55, 10 seconds ahead of teammate Andy Spenser. Bonners Ferry, led by third-place Josh Shervan (17:15) won the team title with 35 points.

Shea (19:28) topped the field by 1:22. Runner-up Missy Ennis (20:50) of Priest River had another 40 seconds on the field. Newport scored a meet-low 46, followed by Bonners Ferry’s 66.

Friday’s football

Shaun Hundley rushed for a 176 yards and two touchdowns to lead Cheney (1-0) to a 31-17 non-league win over visiting Lake City (1-1).

Hundley scored on runs of 59 and 77 yards. Brian Ross scored on runs of 30 and 40 yards to pace LC.
