A Peace Corps volunteer investigating illegal logging activities was shot and injured in the leg, police said Sunday. Police suspect illegal loggers.

Lori Whuez, 23, was with two forest rangers and three employees of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources when shots were fired at the group in a forest, said police regional director Ricardo de Leon.

The shooting took place Wednesday in Camarines Sur province, about 190 miles east of Manila.

Whuez and two forest rangers slightly injured by thrown stones were treated at a local hospital for their injuries.
