Galarraga Powers Rockies Past Astros

National League

Andres Galarraga, leading the National League in home runs and RBIs, connected twice Sunday and the Colorado Rockies beat the visiting Houston Astros 11-4 for their eighth straight victory.

Galarraga hit a solo shot in the second inning and a three-run drive in the sixth, giving him 45 home runs and 140 RBIs.

Vinny Castilla hit his 39th homer for the Rockies, who began the day five games behind San Diego in the wild-card race.

Houston lost its seventh in a row on the road.

Braves 3, Mets 2

New York

Tom Glavine struck out 10 in 8-2/3 innings and Chipper Jones drove in two runs, helping Atlanta Braves stop a six-game losing streak.

Glavine (14-9), who had lost his previous two decisions, allowed 10 hits before leaving after putting two runners on in the ninth.

Mark Wohlers inherited a first-and-third situation in the ninth. His wild pitch brought the Mets within 3-2 before he struck out pinch hitter Andy Tomberlin for his 35th save.

Marlins 4, Expos 3

Montreal

Jeff Conine homered for the second straight game and drove in two runs as Florida avoided a four-game sweep against Montreal.

Marlins starter Al Leiter reached the 15-win mark for the first time in his career, striking out nine in 6-1/3 innings.

Leiter (15-12), who added two singles, allowed three runs and five hits. Robb Nen got the last four outs for his 32nd save.

Omar Daal (3-4) took the loss.

Dodgers 6, Cardinals 5

Los Angeles

Tim Wallach’s two-out, two-run single capped a four-run rally in the eighth inning, and Los Angeles defeated St. Louis for its 18th win in 23 games.

Pinch-hitter Orestes Marrero drew a one-out walk from Mark Petkovsek in the eighth and Wayne Kirby drew another walk with two outs. Dennis Eckersley (0-6) relieved and was greeted by Raul Mondesi’s RBI single, making it 5-3.

Eric Karros followed with a ground-rule double to drive in another run before Wallach singled.

Padres 8, Reds 0

San Diego

Tony Gwynn went 4 for 4 and Ken Caminiti tied Dave Winfield’s team record of 118 RBIs in a season as San Diego routed Cincinnati.

Gwynn, who added two RBIs, raised his average to .357. Gwynn, a six-time N.L. batting champion, has 29 career four-hit games, three of them this season. Wally Joyner added a two-run double and Chris Gomez a two-run triple.

Bucs 4-11, Giants 1-9

San Francisco

Tony Womack doubled in two runs during a six-run 10th and Pittsburgh won the nightcap of its doubleheader with San Francisco to complete a five-game sweep.

The Giants had not lost five straight games in a series at home since the New York Giants lost a six-game set to the Pirates and Honus Wagner.

Barry Bonds of the Giants stole his 30th base of the year, giving him the fourth 30-steal, 30-homer season of his career. His father Bobby holds the major league record of five 30-30 seasons.

Phillies 6, Cubs 1

Chicago

Benito Santiago hit three home runs and drove in six runs to lead Philadelphia to its victory over Chicago.

Santiago hit a leadoff home run in the second, a three-run homer with one out in the sixth, and a two-run homer with none out in the eighth to raise his season total to 29.

It was the first three-homer game and six-RBI game in the majors for Santiago.

The Phillies now have won back-to-back games for the first time since Aug. 20-21 at Los Angeles.

Andres Galarraga set a single-season record for homers hit by players born in Venezuela, topping the 43 hit for Boston by Tony Armas in 1984. … The Rockies lifted their major league record for home-park homers to 141. … Astros batters have been hit by pitches 79 times, breaking the N.L. mark set by the 1910 Cardinals and matched by the 1971 Expos. … Of Vinny Castilla’s 39 home runs for Colorado, 21 have come on the first pitch . … The Padres bullpen held the Reds hitless for 10 straight innings.
