Nazis Sold Jewels To Swiss Dealers

Compiled From Wire Services

Nazi Germany gained millions of dollars to run its war machine a half-century ago by selling jewels stolen from Jews to dealers in Switzerland, a Swiss newspaper said Sunday.

“Swiss Dealers were the ‘Fences’ of the Holocaust,” said the headline in the Zurich-based SonntagsZeitung.

Coming on the heels of allegations that Swiss banks profited from gold stolen by the Nazis, news that Switzerland gained from the personal loss of Holocaust victims “is hard to bear,” chief editor Ueli Haldimann said in an editorial.

The report was based on documents found in German archives.
