Associated Press

American League

The Baltimore Orioles overcame a five-run deficit Thursday night for a 10-9 win, salvaging the finale of the three-game series with the host New York Yankees after getting blown out 9-3 in the doubleheader opener.

Kenny Rogers pitched 5 shutout innings and Wade Boggs went 4 for 4 in the opener. Todd Zeile went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs in the second game, including the tiebreaker in the eighth.

Indians 9, Royals 1 Cleveland

In another impressive audition for postseason starts, Chad Ogea allowed three hits in eight innings as Cleveland beat Kansas City.

Ogea (9-5), a possible third or spot starter in the playoffs, lost his shutout bid in the eighth when Craig Paquette hit his 21st home run.

Red Sox 8, Tigers 3 Detroit

A day after catching Roger Clemens’ 20-strikeout game, Bill Haselman homered as Boston beat Detroit and kept its slim wild-card hopes alive.

White Sox 8, Twins 3 Chicago

Frank Thomas hit his eighth homer in nine games to pace a crucial victory over Minnesota as Chicago broke a four-game losing streak and boosted its dim playoff hopes.

Clearing the bases

Baltimore’s Brady Anderson set a league record for left-handed batters when he was hit by a pitch for the 21st time this season. Anderson broke the record set by Harry Gessler of the 1911 Washington Senators.
