Vikings Beat Timberwolves On The Road Cda’s Homeless Volleyball Players Expand On Their Impressive Record

Perhaps the Coeur d’Alene High School volleyball team should play the entire season away from home.

Shut out from its own gym during September while new bleachers are installed, Coeur d’Alene continued its impressive play on the road Thursday, posting a 15-13, 15-12 victory over cross-town rival Lake City in a tightly contested Inland Empire League match.

It was Lake City’s league opener as the Timberwolves fell to 3-4 overall. It was CdA’s second win in as many league matches - the Vikings won at Lewiston on Tuesday - as they moved to 8-1 overall.

The match’s start was delayed 90 minutes because of long preliminary matches.

But when it finally began, Vikings senior middle hitter Angie Shirley took control.

The 6-foot-1 Shirley contributed from all over the court, notching eight kills, four aces, two tips and one stuff block.

Appropriately, she recorded the match winner on a well-timed set on a quick attack.

“She played really well,” CdA coach Karla Mitchell said. “I think for sitting for so long (before the match), it was emotionally draining, but the kids did a great job. Both teams worked really, really hard. It was an unsure match the whole way.”

Lake City had its chances. The T-Wolves took a 5-0 lead in the opening game, but the Vikings fought back to build a 9-7 advantage.

An ace by Brianne Taylor helped the T-Wolves tie the game at 9-all, and four more points gave LC a 13-9 lead.

But Shirley stopped LC’s momentum with a kill.

That opened the door for the Vikings, who rallied to win the game with a 6-0 run.

The second game began as a repeat of the first. LC moved out to a 4-0 advantage, but CdA fought back behind three aces by Shirley.

LC regained the lead on a kill by Lindsay Herbert and two aces by Melanie Adams at 10-7. Vikings/ A kill moments later by Alison Asher put LC ahead 12-8.

The Viks closed with another rally, however. A dink by setter Kimi Towery put CdA ahead to stay at 13-12.

Finally after several side outs, Jessica Janke pounded away a kill and Shirley followed shortly thereafter with the match winner.

Another key factor for the Viks was their effective passing and the setting of Towery.

Herbert played well for LC. She led with seven kills.

Josetta SiJohn had 12 service points as visiting Lakeside (2-4) beat North Idaho Christian 15-6, 15-11 in a non-league match at Hayden Lake.

The Knights jumped to leads of 9-3 in the first game and 7-0 in the clincher. SiJohn served six consecutive points to begin the second game. Harmony Hammond had three kills and Mindy Middleton three aces for Lakeside.

Amy Lemon’s nine aces and Casidy Beamis’ 20 assists led Kellogg to a 15-11, 15-12 Intermountain League win over visiting Lakeland.

Joey Luchini added six kills for the Wildcats, who moved into first place ahead of idle St. Maries (2-0, 8-3). Amber Jamison led the Hawks (1-1, 5-5) with nine kills.

Bridgett McNeil and Janna Kellas had two goals and one assist apiece to guide visiting Lake City (3-2-1, 4-3-1) to a 7-0 North Idaho League win over Bonners Ferry (0-5-0).

Krista Lien added one goal and one assist for the Timberwolves, whose lineup lacked seven players on a retreat. Starting LC goalie Jeanne Russell handed over the net to Erin Fender in the second half and chalked up one goal and one assist.

CdA’s match at Moscow was postponed because of a wet field. No rescheduled date was announced.

Scott McGlocklin may have been the only one to notice, but he felt his 89-yard, two touchdown effort in the Mead Panthers’ season opening football game was sub-par. Out to prove a point, if only to himself, the senior running back rambled for 179 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers swamped Shadle Park 37-7 before 3,040 fans in the lone Greater Spokane League football game at Albi Stadium Thursday night.

“I just didn’t have a very good game last week,” the 214-pound battering ram said. “I came out and wanted to pick it up a step. I tried to run as hard as I could, follow my tackles and go for the end zone.”

Jeff Lafferty rushed for 98 yards for Shadle Park.
