Angels Rally Late To Shock Rangers

Associated Press

American League

Texas blew it again.

The Rangers’ lead in the American League West dropped to one game Friday night when Garret Anderson hit a two-run double off Mike Stanton in the 10th inning, giving the California Angels a 6-5 win.

This time, Texas wasted three leads: 3-0, 4-3 and 5-4.

The Rangers came within one out of stopping their slide. Mark McLemore hit an RBI single off Mike James in the top of the 10th for the 5-4 lead, and Stanton (4-4) got the first two outs in the bottom half.

But Alex Arias and Rex Hudler singled and Anderson doubled up the gap in left-center for the game-winner.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 1

Baltimore

Pat Hentgen shut out Baltimore for eight-plus innings as Toronto slowed the Orioles’ push to the playoffs.

Baltimore, coming off a critical three-game series with the Yankees, committed three errors, stranded 12 runners and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 2

New York

Tim Wakefield pitched eight effective innings and Boston beat New York, picking up a game in the wild-card race with its fifth straight victory.

Boston, which had lost seven in a row at Yankee Stadium, tied it with two runs in the sixth against Dwight Gooden. The Red Sox then scored twice in the seventh, helped by shortstop Derek Jeter’s throwing error.

White Sox 7, Twins 3

Chicago

Frank Thomas hit his ninth homer in his last 10 games - a grand slam - to lead Chicago over Minnesota.

Thomas’ slam, the fourth of his career, highlighted a five-run second inning, when Chicago scored all the runs after two outs.

Royals 6, Indians 4

Cleveland

Rookie Brian Bevil got his first big-league victory and handed Charles Nagy his first loss since Aug. 10 as Kansas City beat Cleveland.

Bevil, a 30th-round draft pick making his first start in the majors, allowed four hits in five innings. The Indians, who have already clinched the A.L. Central, lost for only the third time in 15 games.

Tigers 10, Brewers 1

Milwaukee

Melvin Nieves hit a three-run homer and Travis Fryman drove in three runs as Detroit snapped a season-high 12-game losing streak with a victory over Milwaukee.

The Tigers, who won only their third game in 15 this September, also lost 12 consecutive earlier in the season. The streak was the longest since the Tigers lost 19 straight in 1975.

Clearing the bases

New York’s Dwight Gooden has won just one of his last 10 starts. … The Orioles’ Brady Anderson had two doubles, giving him a team-record 87 extra-base hits this season. … Chicago’s Frank Thomas has knocked in a career-high 130 runs this season.
