Bucke Up Average To 71 Points

Seventh-ranked Ohio State handed Pittsburgh its worst loss ever, pounding the Panthers 72-0 Saturday at Columbus, Ohio, behind three touchdowns apiece by Pepe Pearson and freshman David Boston.

The Buckeyes (2-0) scored on their first 10 possessions, outgained the Panthers (1-3) 602-120 in total yards and had a 29-4 advantage in first downs.

The Buckeyes (2-0), who routed Rice 70-7 two weeks ago in their opener, have scored 142 points in their first two games.

Midwest

(8) Michigan 20, Boston College 14: At Ann Arbor, Mich., Scott Driesbach led the Wolverines (3-0) to two fourth-quarter TDs, both set up by interceptions as Michigan held off the upset-minded Eagles (1-2).

Minnesota 35, (23) Syracuse 33: At Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers (3-0) wasted a 29-12 lead before quarterback Cory Sauter led them to two Adam Bailey field goals in the final 5:23, including the winner with 42 seconds left against the favored Orangemen (0-2).

Louisville 30, Michigan St. 20: Trailing by 10 points at halftime, the Cardinals (2-2) got three touchdown passes from backup quarterback Chris Redman in the second half and defeated the Spartans (1-2) at East Lansing, Mich.

Northwestern 28, Ohio 7: Evanston, Ill., Steve Schnur threw three touchdown passes and Darnell Autry rushed for 115 yards as the Wildcats (2-1) defeated the Bobcats (2-2).

Illinois 38, Akron 7: At Champaign, Ill., Robert Holcombe ran for three touchdowns as the Illini (1-3) ended a four-game TD drought in an easy victory over the Zips (0-4).

Iowa St. 42, N. Iowa 23: At Ames, Iowa, Troy Davis returned to last year’s form, running a school-record 53 times for 241 yards and five touchdowns as the Cyclones (1-2) broke a five-game losing streak in defeating the Panthers (3-1).

West Virginia 20, Purdue 6: At West Lafayette, Ind., the Mountaineers (4-0) intercepted four Purdue passes, harassed quarterback Billy Dicken with seven sacks, took advantage of penalties and beat the Boilermakers (0-3).

Missouri 38, Clemson 24: At Columbia, Mo., Corby Jones, making his eighth career start, threw his first two touchdown passes to lead Missouri (1-2) over Clemson (1-2).

East

(5) Penn St. 41, Temple 0: At East Rutherford, N.J., Aaron Harris ran for two touchdowns and made key blocks to set up two other scores as the Nittany Lions (4-0) beat the Owls (1-3) for their second consecutive shutout.

Army 35, Duke 17: Quarterback Ronnie McAda rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another as the Cadets (2-0) unveiled a rarely-used passing attack to defeat Duke (0-2) at West Point, N.Y.

Navy 19, SMU 17: At Annapolis, Md., Tom Vanderhorst kicked a 38-yard field goal on the final play to give the Midshipmen (2-0) the victory over the Mustangs (2-2).

West

Brigham Young 17, New Mexico 14: At Provo, Utah, Steve Sarkisian managed just one touchdown pass for the Cougars (3-1, 1-0 WAC) against a swarming Lobos (3-1, 0-1) defense and unheralded Ronney Jenkins ran for the winning score.

Colorado St. 35, UNLV 16: At Fort Collins, Colo., Moses Moreno passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and the Rams (2-2, 1-0) opened defense of their Western Athletic Conference title by holding off the Rebels (0-4, 0-2).

Wyoming 22, Air Force 19: At Laramie, Wyo., Josh Wallwork passed for 453 yards and Cory Wedel kicked his thirdgame winning field goal of the season for as the Cowboys (4-0, 2-0 WAC) toppled the Falcons (2-1, 2-1).

San Jose St. 26, UTEP 25: Carl Dean’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Windrell Hayes with 1:03 left completed a wild fourth quarter as the Spartans (1-3, 1-1 WAC) rallied to defeat the Miners (1-2, 0-1 WAC) at San Jose, Calif.

Utah 45, Fresno State 17: At Salt Lake City, Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala rushed 29 times for 169 yards and Juan Johnson tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns as the Utes (3-1, 1-0) throttled the Bulldogs (0-3, 0-1).
