Teenagers Followed, Shot At One Hit After Traffic Dispute Leads To Violence

A drive-by shooting in a North Side Spokane neighborhood put a teenager in the hospital early Sunday morning with a bullet in his leg.

The shooting followed a traffic altercation in downtown Spokane about 1 a.m., police said.

Three young men told police they were driving on Riverside Avenue when several young men in a Nissan Pathfinder yelled insults at them.

People in the cars exchanged words, then both vehicles headed north on Division, police said.

The Pathfinder followed the other car - for 20 minutes and more than five miles - to a well-kept home in the 7700 block of North Wilding.

An 18-year-old who lives there stepped outside to meet his friends. The youth, who asked not to be identified, said he and four of his friends were standing in his front yard when the Pathfinder appeared.

About five shots were fired.

“They were only like three feet away when they started shooting,” the Wilding resident said. “After the first one, I just dove behind the car. Everyone else did pretty much the same.”

The only person wounded in the attack was another 18-year-old. He was listed in satisfactory condition at a local hospital late Sunday with a shattered femur, authorities said.

After the shooting, the Pathfinder drove west on Lincoln Road.

Two of the suspects were described only as a white man and a black man. There was no description available of a third man also seen in the vehicle.

The black Nissan had a rear-mounted spare tire with a Pathfinder wheel cover, police said.
