Typhoon Buffets, Drenches Japan

Compiled From Wire Services

Typhoon Violet churned through the Tokyo area and other Pacific coast cities Sunday, killing at least three people, leaving one missing and disrupting train, air and ferry service.

Thousands of Tokyo residents struggled with umbrellas twisted inside-out by the wind and pressed ahead with soaked clothing to reach shops and restaurants. Tokyo was pelted with more than 10 inches of rain in 24 hours, according to the weather bureau.
