House: Make Rules Apply To White House

Compiled From Wire Services

A bill requiring the White House to live by the same employment and civil rights laws applying to private businesses and Congress passed the House on Tuesday.

The bill, passed 410-5, is modeled after the Congressional Accountability Act of 1995, which extended federal workplace protections to about 34,000 employees of Congress and related agencies.

The Presidential and Executive Office Accountability Act specifically extends the protections of 11 laws to White House employees, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act.
