Exner Guides Upstart Ewu Past Sac State

Kim Exner had 24 kills and 24 digs and Lynn Robisen contributed with 25 digs as Eastern Washington University’s volleyball team beat Big Sky Conference rival Sacramento State 17-15, 15-13, 15-13 Thursday in Sacramento, Calif.

The Hornets, picked to win the conference in the coaches’ preseason poll, fell to 8-5, 0-1.

Eastern, picked to finish seventh among nine conference schools, improved to 7-4, 2-1.

The game was the first of five consecutive road matches for Eastern.

The Eagles travel to Weber State Saturday in Ogden, Utah, and play a non-conference game at Gonzaga Tuesday.

Boxing

Spokane’s Frank Vassar rallied from a third-round knockdown to defeat Aljenon De Bose of Oakland, Calif., with a fifth-round technical knockout in their light heavyweight fight Wednesday night.

The fight was part of a seven-bout card at the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Bingo in Worley, Idaho.

Results from the other fights were not reported.
