Housing In Sawtooth Area Protested

Compiled From Wire Services

Conservationists want Idaho’s members of Congress to block housing developments planned in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

Two housing subdivisions inside the recreation area are under development. Officials say the developments violate regulations, but the Forest Service says it can’t prevent development without an appropriation to buy scenic easements and development rights.

The Idaho Conservation League urged the delegation to get the money.

“The Sawtooth NRA was given special federal protection in 1972, because of its recognized value to all Americans for natural and scenic wonders,” said ICL Director John McCarthy. “Now these wonders are in danger of being diminished and blemished by housing developments.”
