Um Fraternities Vote To Ban Alcohol
The University of Montana’s All Greek Council has agreed to ban alcohol from fraternity houses.
“We no longer wish to be known for alcohol or partying,” said Drew Way, head of the council that governs the fraternity houses. “We want the focus to be on our basic principles of tradition, brotherhood and sisterhood, and philanthropy.”
While the ban has been considered for several years, Dean of Students Barbara Hollmann said Thursday that a brawl the morning of Sept. 15 brought the issue to a head.
“I’m very pleased the leaders of the Greek System realize the seriousness of the problems caused by alcohol in their houses,” Hollmann said. “We look forward to working together to implement and enforce this new policy.”
The ban does not apply to the private rooms of fraternity members who are of legal drinking age.
