French ultramarathon runner Roland Vuillemenot won the 147.2-mile Spartathlon from Athens to Sparta, Greece, in 26 hours, 21 minutes and 20 seconds.

The runners, 139 men and 25 women from 28 countries, set off Friday morning from the foot of Acropolis hill in a race that commemorates an historic run to Sparta 2,500 years ago.

American Nobuaki Koyago finished second in 27:41.55.

At New York, Steve Scott won the Masters division of the Discover Card Mile on Fifth Avenue by nearly 20 seconds in 4 minutes, 6.57 seconds. Then, 40 minutes later, the 40-year-old former UC Irvine runner outkicked world indoor mile record-holder Eamonn Coghlan of Ireland in a two-man Champions of the Mile race in 4:37.02.
