Silvernail Kills Her Own Record In WSU’s Win

Washington State University’s Sarah Silvernail set a school record with 39 kills as the Cougars squeaked past the University of California 14-16, 15-11, 12-15, 15-9, 15-7 in Berkeley, Calif., Saturday.

Silvernail broke her own record of 35 kills set in 1994 against USC.

After No. 10 WSU (10-3, 1-3 Pac-10) and Cal (3-7, 0-4) split the first two games, the Bears controlled most of the third game as UC led the match 2-1.

The Cougars held the lead throughout the fourth game to force a final set. WSU built a 10-1 lead, but Cougar hitting errors temporarily let the Bears back in the game 11-6, before finishing off Cal 15-7. Stephanie Papke finished with 74 assists and 17 digs for the Cougars.

In another Pac-10 match, No. 4 Stanford downed No. 18 Washington 15-7, 15-9, 16-14.

Whitman College won one of its four matches and Whitworth lost two at the University of Puget Sound Quadrangular volleyball tournament in Tacoma.

Whitman defeated UPS 11-15, 15-9, 14-16, 15-10, 15-13 in its first match before falling to Pacific Lutheran University 15-7, 7-15, 3-15, 15-12, 15-12.

Whitworth lost to PLU in three straight 15-6, 15-11, 15-11 and then UPS beat Whitworth 15-12, 15-4, 15-10.

Idaho improved its record to 12-1, 2-0 by defeating Utah State University 15-4, 15-13, 15-5 in a Big Sky match at Memorial Gym.

Jessica Moore led Idaho with 16 kills and 13 digs. Lynne Hyland finished with 41 of the Vandals’ 43 assists. Mindi Jackson notched 20 assists for Utah State (4-12).

Eastern Washington University won the first set, but couldn’t hold on as previously winless Weber State defeated the Eagles 9-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-12 in a Big Sky Conference match at Ogden, Utah.

Toni Schwinn led the Eagles (7-5, 2-2) with 54 assists, and Kim Exner finished with 26 kills. Lynn Robison led all players with 24 digs.

Melissa Leonard of Weber State (1-15, 1-3) finished with 17 kills. Robyn Shea of the Wildcats led both teams with 65 assists.

Community Colleges of Spokane won four of its five matches and finished 6-4 in the Valley of the Sun Tournament at Phoenix.

CCS beat Phoenix Community College 15-13, 15-8 and West Arizona CC 15-5, 15-5. Dixie Community College gave CCS its only loss of the day 15-12, 15-12.

The Sasquatch then defeated South Mountain CC 15-9, 15-6, and Scottsdale CC 15-8, 15-12.

Cross Country

Karl Keska of the University of Oregon, was the top collegiate finisher at the Mountain West Cross Country Classic, finishing the 8,000-meter run at the University of Montana golf course in Missoula with a time of 24 minutes, 42.6 seconds.

Three former Mead runners helped the Ducks post an apparent team victory. Greg James placed 15th with a time of 26:08. Rob Aubrey (26:10.7) and Micah Davis (26:36.1) finished 18th and 20th, respectively.

Matt Davis was unable to compete due to a stress fracture in his right femur.

Although team scores weren’t available, Oregon placed eight runners in the top 43.

Soccer

Jeff McAllister scored a goal and Josh Fouts recorded his second straight shutout as the Gonzaga University’s men team downed the University of New Mexico 3-0 in the late match Friday at the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas. The win was the fifth in a row for the Bulldogs (5-2-1).

Community Colleges of Spokane men’s soccer team suffered its first loss when Clark College of Vancouver, Wash., notched a 2-0 win in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community College’s matchup at Spokane. Despite Spokane’s 32 shots on goal, Lucas Heater and Chris Atkins of Clark scored the only goals of the game 5 minutes apart in the second half.

The CCS women’s soccer team trounced Lower Columbia Community College 5-1 in a NWAACC game at Spokane Falls Community College. The Sasquatch’s Katie Snow had a goal and an assist and Holly Vanwert finished with two assists. Spokane improved to 5-0-1 in the NWAACC, 7-1-2 overall.

Softball

Sullivan Scoreboard of Spokane is 3-1 at the ASA National Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., and will continue play today after defeating the Dallas Express Cowboys 14-10, and the Gators of Waco, Texas, 15-9.

J.R. Bluff hit a three-run home run as Spokane finished with four double plays against the Dallas Express. Steve Sanders hit a two-run homer against the Gators and teammate Matt Bevacqua went 4 for 4.
