Arizona State Jumps To No. 5

Arizona State, off to its best start in 14 years, now is ranked No. 5 - ahead of such traditional powers as Notre Dame, Michigan, Nebraska, Colorado, Miami and Tennessee.

But two questions linger like the smog these days over the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Are the Sun Devils that good? And what’s going to happen when they play a road game?

“At this point, this team has … special players,” said Arizona State coach Bruce Snyder, trying to lead the Sun Devils to their first bowl game since 1987.

“I think we’re a fun team to watch. We have the markings of a special team, though we won’t really know until November and December.”

The Sun Devils improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10 with a 48-27 win over Oregon Saturday night.

It was the fourth of five home games to start the season and followed a 19-0 upset over then top-ranked Nebraska.

Arizona State, which struggled to beat Washington 45-42 in the season opener, then beat North Texas 52-7, next plays Boise State (1-4).

“I know people are going to expect us to beat them and beat them big,” Sun Devils quarterback Jake Plummer said. “We’re going to show them what big-time football is all about.

“We know what we have to do to get to the Rose Bowl and that’s keep on winning.”
