The National Breast Cancer Coalition wants to sway Congress with 2.6 million signatures - one signature for every woman who has breast cancer.
The petitions will be presented to President Clinton and Congress in October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with hopes this will spur Congress to appropriate more money for breast cancer research.
An estimated 1.6 million women have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and 1 million women have it but are not yet diagnosed.
The petition asks the President and Congress to appropriate $2.6 billion for quality breast cancer research between now and 2000. The petition also asks that Congress require breast cancer activists to have a meaningful say in determining how the money is allocated.
Anyone interested in signing the petition can call 1-800-NBCC-838 (622-2838) or access the breast coalition’s World Wide Web site at http://www.natlbcc.org.
