Other Gwynn Wins Division For Padres
National League
Even with the National League West championship at stake, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres played Sunday as if it was a meaningless exhibition game, particularly when it came to pitching decisions.
With both teams assured of playoff spots, the Padres beat the Dodgers 2-0 in 11 innings on pinch-hitter Chris Gwynn’s two-run double, completing a three-game, season-ending sweep for their first division title since 1984.
Gwynn’s older brother Tony went hitless, but won his seventh batting title.
The Padres advanced to play N.L. Central champion St. Louis. The Dodgers wound up as the wild card and will take on N.L. East champion Atlanta.

Steve Avery, his status for the playoffs uncertain, gave up six runs in only two-thirds of an inning in relief as Atlanta lost to Montreal.

St. Louis
Barry Larkin homered twice as Cincinnati ended the season and St. Louis’ five-game winning streak.
Cincinnati’s Hal Morris went 2 for 5 to end the year on a 29-game hitting streak, the longest in the majors this year.

Tony Eusebio doubled home James Mouton from first base in the 10th inning as Houston beat Florida.

Denver
Vinny Castilla and Andres Galarraga hit historic two-run homers and Steve Decker added another, powering Colorado past San Francisco.
Castilla’s homer, his 40th, made Colorado only the second team ever to have three players hit 40 or more homers. The 1973 Atlanta Braves also achieved the feat with Davey Johnson (43), Darrell Evans (41) and Hank Aaron (40).
Galarraga hit his 47th homer. Ellis Burks finished the season with 40.
The Rockies tied the N.L. record for homers in a season with 221, matching the 1947 New York Giants and 1956 Cincinnati Reds.
Galarraga, who had three RBIs, finished with 150, the most in the majors since Tommy Davis had 153 for the Dodgers in 1962.

Jim Leyland won his final game as Pirates manager, as Pittsburgh used a six-run sixth to end the season with a win over Chicago.

Ricky Otero drove in a five runs as Philadelphia rallied to beat New York.
Clearing the bases
Sunday’s game marked the end of Andre Dawson’s 21-year career. He ranks 10th on the N.L.’s all-time home run list with 408 and is the only player in major league history who was intentionally walked five times in one game. … Chicago’s Ryne Sandberg finished with a .244 average to go with 25 homers and 92 RBIs. Sandberg earned a $1 million bonus by playing in 150 games and added $2 million in other incentives to the $2 million base salary in his one-year contract.
