Obituaries

Gordon Bailey Spokane

Visitation for Gordon A. Bailey, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Bailey, who died Tuesday, was born in Hammondsport, N.Y. He was 77.

He graduated from Cornell University. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was shot down in 1943 while flying B-25s out of North Africa and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner in Stalag Luft III.

He also served during the Korean War and flew B-52 missions over North Vietnam.

He retired from the Air Force in 1970 and began his second career as an educator. He taught at the Hutterite Colony west of Spokane, St. Charles Catholic School and for School District 81, retiring in 1990.

Mr. Bailey was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Stalag Luft III and the Manito Golf and Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Bailey; a son, Gordon Bailey of Fairbanks, Alaska; four daughters, Denise Bailey of Reno, Nev., Mary Loosmore of Spirit Lake, Idaho, Amy Tousley of Olympia and Cynthia Plumb of Spokane; five granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

VaNeta Sanner Spokane

Memorial service for VaNeta I. Sanner, 85, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Otis Orchards Community Church. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sanner, a 33-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She was born in Canyon, Wash.

She was a homemaker and a member of Otis Orchards Community Church.

Two husbands, Paul McKenney and Helmer Sanner, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Fern Herman of Spokane and Carolyn Thompson of San Jose, Calif.; three brothers, Cecil Harrison of Post Falls, Albert Harrison of Yakima, and Clifford Harrison of Moorhead, Minn.; five sisters, Myrtle Nettleton and Mable Mitson, both of Spokane, Lenora Greive of Twin Falls, Idaho, Hazel Noyen of Smelterville, Idaho, and Mildred Gillespy of Post Falls; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Spokane Valley Good Samaritan Center.

Marian Carter Spokane

Memorial service for Marian Elizabeth Carter, 83, will be at 2 p.m. April 12 at the family home.

Mrs. Carter, who was born in Omaha, Neb., died Monday.

She came to Spokane in 1916 and later worked with her father in his butcher shop.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and received a teaching certificate from Eastern Washington University.

She moved to San Francisco to work during World War II and following the war, returned to Spokane and married her high school sweetheart, Del Carter, in 1945.

Mrs. Carter was a homemaker, and sold hand-carved and painted buttons she designed at The Crescent.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Gary, Mike and Larry Carter, all of Spokane, and Fred Carter of Virginia; a daughter, Virginia Carter of Chattaroy; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spokane Humane Society or a rosebush can be donated for her garden.

Iris Robertson Spokane

Memorial service for Iris R. Robertson, 90, is planned for 4 p.m. today at Berean Bible Church. Burial was at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Robertson, who was born in Yale, Okla., died Monday.

She was an elementary school teacher for 39 years. She had previously lived and taught in Ferry County, Wash., Malden, Wash., and Newport, Wash. She retired from the Newport School District in 1971 and moved to Spokane.

She was a member of the Spokane Retired Teachers Association and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Robert Robertson, died in 1967.

She is survived by three sons, Jim, Robert and Red Robertson, all of Spokane; two daughters, Rachel Schmeling and Ruth Warner, both of Spokane; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission or Anna Ogden Hall for Women and Children.

Maxine Asker Sagle, Idaho

Private family service for Maxine Velma Asker, 72, will be held at a later date. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Asker, who was born in The Dalles, Ore., died Saturday.

She lived in Washtucna, Wash., for 12 years before moving to Sagle in 1968.

Mrs. Asker worked at Connie’s Cafe for 17 years, retiring in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenton.

Survivors include three daughters, Kay Neace of Asotin, Wash., Judith Kent of Moses Lake and Carol Hutchins of Spokane; her mother, Velma Radcliffe of Goldendale, Wash; a brother, John Radcliffe of Goldendale; five stepchildren, Donna Robinson of Colorado, Ted Asker of Alaska, and Sonja Felix, Peggy Asker and Robert Asker, all of Spokane; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Bernice Beagles Spokane

Service for Bernice C. Beagles, 74, was March 15 at Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Burial was at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Beagles, who died March 11, was born in Irvin, Wash.

She graduated from West Valley High School and Kinman Business University.

She was a homemaker and a longtime Spokane Valley resident.

Mrs. Beagles is survived by her husband of 27 years, A.R. “Russ” Beagles; a daughter, Kathy Prindiville; a son, Mike Prindiville; two stepsons, Gary and Larry beagles; two brothers, Alphonso and Sam Manfred; five grandchildren, one stepgrandchild and several great-grandchildren.

Stella Maas Spokane

No service will be held for Stella J. Maas, 87, at her request. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Maas, who was born in Spokane, died Friday.

She graduated from high school in Bellingham and worked as a registered nurse for 20 years at Brewster (Wash.) Hospital, retiring at age 65.

After her husband, George Maas, died in 1974, Mrs. Maas returned to Spokane in 1976.

Mrs. Maas is survived by two daughters, Louise Hamlin of Spokane and Mariella George of Laramie, Wyo.; a son, Al Maas of Mallott, Wash.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Robert Deno Keller, Wash.

Graveside service for Robert L. Deno, 72, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Kewa Cemetery near Inchelium, Wash. Strate Funeral Home in Grand Coulee is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Deno, who died Monday, was born in Tensed, Idaho.

He was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe and had worked as a truck driver in construction and had farmed in Lind, Wash. He moved to Keller 16 years ago from Lind.

Mr. Deno served in the Army during World War II.

He married Ella Mae Beardslee in Lovelock, Nev., in 1967.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert and Mike Deno; three stepsons, Melvin, Paul and Jesse Judd; a stepdaughter, Arlete Davis; a brother, Glenn Deno of Spokane; five sisters, Louella Vallmer, Pearl Flemming and Eileen Salter, all of Spokane, Ruth Hainline of Richland and Dorothy Massingale of Loon Lake, Wash.

David Stitt Spokane

Memorial service for David A. Stitt, 49, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Life Center Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stitt, who was born in Washington, D.C., died Wednesday.

He was a graduate of Northern Arizona University and received a master’s degree from Eastern Washington University.

He taught at Evergreen Junior High for 20 years and also taught at Heritage Institute in the summer and on weekends.

Mr. Stitt is survived by his wife, Cheryl Stitt; three sons, Carson, Cody and Tyler Stitt, all at home; his mother, Virginia Stitt of Cottonwood, Ariz.; and a sister, Lynda Schools of Olympia.

Lillian Hopkins Spokane

No service will be held for Lillian J. Hopkins, 83, at her request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Hopkins, who died Sunday, was born in Pullman and graduated from high school there.

She worked as a dental hygienist in Pullman until she moved to Spokane in 1942.

In Spokane, she worked for the American Red Cross and Spokane County Health Department for many years.

She had also worked for Drs. Jones and Saxon until she retired.

Mrs. Hopkins was a member of the Inland Empire Beagle Club.

Her husband, Glenn Hopkins, D.V.M., died in 1986.

She is survived by a brother, Glen Crandall Jr., of Spokane.

Peggy Ross Greenbriar, Tenn.

Memorial service for Peggy A. Ross, 44, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. Maries. Inurnment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Ross, who was born in St. Maries, died Saturday.

She grew up and attended school in St. Maries and lived in Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene and Spokane before moving to the Eastern United States in 1987.

She had worked as a waitress.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Ross of Hayden, Idaho, and John Whitaker of Coeur d’Alene; two brothers, Nolan Whitaker of St. Maries and Tom Whitaker of Coeur d’Alene; and two sisters, Elaine Davenport of Spokane and Pam Evey of Post Falls.

Nathaniel Layton Spokane

Memorial service for Nathaniel D. Layton, 88, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Heights Congregational Church. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Layton, who died Tuesday, was born in West Newton, Pa.

In the mid-1950s, he moved to Spokane and worked for Jensen-Byrd as a packer. He retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital as a laundry clerk in the early 1970s.

Mr. Layton was a member of Lincoln Heights Congregational Church and the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Hallie Layton; a brother, Walter Layton of Florida; a sister, AlphaRetta Hartman of Spokane; and two grandsons.

John ‘Jack’ O’Brien Spokane

No service will be held for John E. “Jack” O’Brien, 73, at his request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. O’Brien, who died Sunday, was born in Detroit and had lived in Spokane for 28 years.

He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He received a presidential citation and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Mr. O’Brien worked as a real estate certified public accountant for Alvin J. Wolfe and James S. Black.

Mr. O’Brien is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joan O’Brien; a daughter, Jacklynn Kortmeyer of The Colony, Texas; two stepsons, Bruce Susinger of Homer, Alaska, and Ron Susinger of Spokane; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Duane ‘Toomzy’ Toombs Spokane

Memorial service for Duane B. “Toomzy” Toombs, 57, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Tooms, who was born in Kellogg, died Wednesday.

He was a graduate of North Central High School and had lived in Spokane for more than 50 years.

Mr. Toombs had worked for General Machinery for 25 years, and was a member of the Dukes and the Northwest Super Stock Association.

He is survived by a daughter, Traci Toombs of Bellingham; his mother Thelma Toombs of Spokane; a brother, Carl Toombs, and a sister, Ruth Lowry, both of Spokane; and a grandson.

K. B. Harkness Spokane

No service will be held for K. B. Harkness, 82, at his request.

Mr. Harkness, who died March, 24, was born in Independence, Iowa.

He was a 43-year Cheney resident and worked as an auto mechanic for Eastern State Hospital.

Mr. Harness is survived by his wife, Adeline Shaw Harkness; two sons, Jack Harkness of Bremerton and Tommy Harkness of Pinedale, Wyo.; four sisters, Wanda McGraw of Waterloo, Iowa, Thelma Roberts of Wisonsin, and Rena Trainor and Lois Shephard, both of Evansdale, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Eva Beauchene Spokane

Memorial service for Eva Helen Beauchene, 84, is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home Born in Astoria, Ore., Mrs. Beauchene died Friday. She was a 55-year Spokane resident and worked as a cashier for J.C. Penney for 23 years.

She is survived by three daughters, Margie Skantel of Kellogg, Shirley Michel of Port Townsend, Wash., and Julie Kees of Spokane; two sons, Ronald and Byron Beauchene, both of Canada; a sister, Ester Ricketts of Prichard, Idaho; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
