Assistant Coach Will Fill Idaho Vacancy

Dave Farrar is expected to become men’s basketball coach at the University of Idaho today, The Spokesman-Review has learned.

A press conference announcing Farrar’s promotion from associate coach to head coach has been scheduled for 11 this morning.

Farrar and Stanford assistant Doug Oliver interviewed in Moscow on Saturday. They apparently were the only candidates formally interviewed by the university’s screening committee and President Robert Hoover, though athletic director Oval Jaynes visited with North Idaho College coach Hugh Watson earlier this week and on Sunday.Farrar, 49, was the lead assistant under coach Kermit Davis, who departed last week for an associate head coaching job at Louisiana State University.

With the national signing date coming up on Wednesday, the Vandals moved swiftly to replace Davis. Farrar has been Idaho’s main recruiter, so he is familiar with the team’s recruiting needs.

Farrar has head coaching experience at the Division I and junior college levels. He had a 61-73 record in five seasons at Middle Tennessee State (1991-96) and a 137-33 mark in five seasons at Hutchinson (Kansas) Junior College (1986-91).

Watson declined to comment on the latest meeting. Oliver feels the university had its mind made up before he was interviewed.

“I was there just to appease the process,” he said. “My nterview was very fragmented.”
