Mafia Informants Get New Lives In Germany

Compiled From Wire Services

Dozens of Italian Mafia turncoats have found refuge under new identities in Germany in a secret witness protection program, a newspaper said Sunday.

“Most of those who have turned state’s evidence have normal jobs in Germany, work in pizzerias or in some cases even have their own small businesses,” the mass-circulation Bild am Sonntag said.

A prosecutor in the southern Italian town of Catania, Nunzio Sarpietro, was quoted as saying that German authorities have a deal with Italy to give shelter to some Mafia members who have renounced organized crime and helped finger other mob figures.
