From Staff And Wire Reports

A 79-year-old man was killed Monday night in a head-on collision on state Highway 904 near Cheney, the Washington State Patrol said.

Witnesses said an eastbound Toyota Celica crossed the center line and smashed into a westbound Ford Crown Victoria at 8:12 p.m., the State Patrol said.

The driver of the Celica, Gary Gaskell, was listed in serious condition late Monday at Sacred Heart Medical Center. His age and hometown were not immediately available.

WSP Sgt. Lee Boling said more witnesses will be interviewed in the ongoing investigation.

Both cars were destroyed.

The name of the man who died, a Cheney resident, was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
